Carry in your hand luggage

  • Passport with visa / POE letter (Canada) or grant letter (Australia)
  • LOA or CoE, proof of funds, OSHC / insurance details
  • Original academic certificates and transcripts
  • Temporary accommodation booking and the address
  • Prescriptions and a doctor's letter for any medicines
  • Some cash in the destination currency and a forex/travel card

Last two weeks

  1. Scan every document and store copies in cloud storage and email.
  2. Unlock your phone for international SIMs.
  3. Tell your bank in Nepal you're travelling and set up online banking.
  4. Give family your address, school contact and flight details.
  5. Check the orientation date and plan to arrive at least a week before.

Packing

  • Canada: a real winter jacket, boots and gloves (you can buy these on arrival, often cheaper during sales).
  • Australia: sun protection. Winters in the south can still be cold indoors.
  • A universal plug adapter, and a few home-country snacks within the customs rules
Declare food

Australia's biosecurity rules are strict. Declare all food, seeds and plant or animal products on your arrival card. Undeclared items can lead to fines or visa cancellation. Canada also requires you to declare food.

Official sources

Rules change often. Always confirm with the official source before you submit anything.
