Proof of funds from Nepal: what officers look for
How much to show, which documents prove it, and how to explain where the money came from.
You must show that you can pay your tuition, living costs and travel. Officers look at the amount, and just as closely at whether the money is genuine, available and legally earned.
What to show
- Tuition for the first year (paying it in advance strengthens a Canadian application)
- The official living-cost amount for one year. See the Costs page for the current figure.
- Travel costs, and extra amounts for any family members coming with you
Common evidence from Nepal
| Evidence | Tips |
|---|---|
| Bank balance certificate | From a commercial bank, in the account holder's name, with the date and the equivalent in the destination currency |
| Bank statements (usually 6 months or more) | Shows the money has been held over time; explain any large recent deposits |
| Education loan sanction letter | From a recognised bank, stating the amount, collateral and disbursement terms |
| Sponsor income | Salary letters, business registration and audit reports, rental agreements, agriculture income certificate, tax clearance |
| Relationship proof | Ward-issued relationship verification certificate and birth certificate for parent sponsors |
| GIC (Canada, optional) | A Guaranteed Investment Certificate with a participating Canadian bank; widely trusted |
Temporarily parking a relative's or lender's money in your account, then withdrawing it after the visa, is a well-known pattern. Officers look for it. Show only genuine funds with a clear source.
Explaining the source
Write a short sponsor letter: who is paying, their relationship to you, how they earn their income, and how much they will provide. Attach the documents that prove each point. If land was sold or a fixed deposit matured, include the sale deed or deposit certificate.
